Keep Bloomfield Farming!

Bloomfield, CT

Essential Question: What qualities should help a town decide which farmland to purchase and preserve when a significant amount has been lost to commercial and residential development in the last thirty years?

Rough Goal: A way to save declining farmland properties being lost to development

Area: 29 square miles

Our Clients: The Town of Bloomfield, CT, and the Wintonbury Land Trust.

They recognized that farmland is Natural Capital, essential to the town’s resilience.

Refined Goals: Develop a scorecard to identify the value of farm parcels available for permanent preservation.

Our team analyzed a number of conditions using GIS to create a unique set of maps of farms with prime agricultural conditions.

Bloomfield's location between six towns with higher real estate values drove many of the farmers out
We held a number of well-attended community meetings with farmers, land trust staff, town leaders and administrators.
Farmland lost since 1984 was caused by industrial and residential real estate development.
To identify the most valuable farmland could be, we made a series of GIS Spatial Analysis maps that revealed useful information for our Farmland Decision Tree.

We created a Farmland Preservation Decision Map to help us understand our findings and to help communicate effectually during community meetings.
